Apple to release iOS 5 early for existing customers

Apple has announced the release date of its new iOS 5 mobile operating system will be October 12th.

The release date is two days earlier than the official launch of the new iPhone 4S, which will go on sale on Friday (October 14th), allowing customers who already own Apple mobile devices to upgrade early.

Products which can be updated include the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad and iPad 2. New features include a drop down notification bar, as well as over-the-air software updates, using Apple's iCloud platform.

Philip Schiller, senior vice-president of worldwide product marketing for Apple, said that the iCloud platform working alongside the iOS 5 operating system is a 'breakthrough combination'.

'While our competitors try to imitate iPhone with a checklist of features, our iPhone can deliver these breakthrough innovations that work seamlessly together,' he added.
